Gin Expert Shares 5 Easy Ways to Enjoy Gin on World Gin Day
Out of all the liquors, gin is one of the most versatile and healthiest spirits ever created. And if there is a good reason to drink gin other than Queen Elizabeth II, supposedly loves having a gin cocktail every day, World Gin Day is on the 10th of June. Many of us Aussies think it's a great idea to mix gin with everything but there's one thing Edinburgh Gin Experiential Ambassador, Philip Kingscott advises not to mix Gin with. "Gin is already rich in taste so any mixer with a heavy flavour – like cola or lemonade, will drown the gin's taste. The sweetness of these drinks is too over bearing to enjoy a gin's qualities." " If you do like a mixer with lots of flavour, perhaps try Edinburgh Gin's Cannonball or Rhubarb and Ginger gins which can at least punch their way through stronger flavours."
Here's Philip's 5 Easy Ways To Enjoy Your Gin On World Gin Day:
1.Try The Gin Neat First
Open the bottle, pour a wee splash into a glass, give it a sniff and then taste. Give it ten seconds to work all the way around your palette before you swallow. What do you taste? Where do you get the sensation of it on your palette. Go back and try it neat again, has it changed?
2. Garnish
Now that you’ve tried it neat, look at what it says on the bottle. Look at the website for the distillery. What garnish do they recommend? Do you agree?
Maybe try with the recommended garnish and then try with one of your own choosing.
3. Mixer
You don't want to overpower the gin, so the lighter the better (at least to start with). Try a light tonic or at least just a classic Indian tonic.
Now you might want to get experimental and think about other mixers you might want to add or cocktails to create.
4. Glassware
Drink your Gin & Tonic from a mug if you want. Have it in a giant fishbowl with streamers and sparklers if that what's you like. You’re the one drinking it. "I was given crystal tumblers as a gift a few years ago, and I really like the sound the ice makes as it pings against the glass – also it makes me feel quite posh as I drink my G&T! But that's just my preference" says Philip.
And don't forget to add ice – as much as you like.
5. No Two Tastes Are The Same
Distilled in the heart and harbour of Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh Gin has recommended serves for all our range. In most cases, it's to bring out certain elements in the gin, whether it's orange peel to enhance the citrus in Classic, lemon peel to add to the sharp hit of Cannonball, or grapefruit peel and thyme to bring out the refreshing character of Edinburgh's Seaside gin. However they are ‘recommended’. By trying the gin neat first and getting to grips with what you like about it, you can serve it the way you’d like.
