NYPD captain busted for DWI in Manhattan

Jun 22, 2023Jun 22, 2023

The commanding officer of a Brooklyn NYPD precinct was busted for driving drunk when cops found him asleep behind the wheel of his NYPD vehicle with a bottle of booze in his backseat, cops and a police source said.

Cops found NYPD Captain Jared Badillo stopped at a light on E. 14th St. in Manhattan at 12:50 a.m.in his department car early Friday, a police source said. There was a half-empty bottle of vodka in his backseat, the source said.

When Badillo, 39, stepped out of the car, he was wobbly on his feet and slurring his words. His breath reeked of booze, his eyes were bloodshot and his face was flushed, according to the criminal complaint.

Badillo was filmed on an officer's body-worn camera telling an NYPD Lieutenant, "I had three or four beers."

The captain was appointed in April as the commanding officer of the 69th precinct, which covers Canarsie. He has been on the force since July 2006, NYPD records show.

Cops brought Badillo to an intoxicated driver testing unit at the 7th precinct on the Lower East Side where he blew a blood alcohol level of .18 into a breathalyzer, according to the source. In New York, a BAC above the state's legal alcohol driving limit of .08 means a driver can be charged with DWI.

When a Manhattan South NYPD captain arrived at the 7th precinct at about 1:48 a.m., Badillo was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence, cops and a police source said.

Badillo was suspended without pay, cops said. A Manhattan criminal court judge released him without bail at his arraignment Friday morning, according to prosecutors.

Attempts to reach Badillo's lawyer were unsuccessful Friday evening.
