The 10 most expensive bottles of Tequila in the world

Jul 19, 2023Jul 19, 2023

Tequila is booming right now, with the most recent stats showing that the sector will generate sales of US$24.19 billion by 2031. But what are the most expensive bottles of Tequila in the world, and how much were they sold for?

As Tequila's reputation among consumers shifts from party drink to a spirit for all occasions with a burgeoning luxury appeal, people are more and more willing to part ways with a decent chunk of change for their favourite agave-based tipple.

That's why we’ve decided to count down the 10 most expensive bottles of Tequila in the world. Strap yourselves in, because these come with truly eye-watering price tags.

1. Tequila Ley .925 Diamante: US$3.5 million

Widely accepted to be the most expensive Tequila in the world, Tequila Ley .925 Diamante now has the Guinness World Record to back up its claims. The liquid inside the bottle is special; 100% select agave that has been barrel aged for 7 years; a premium extra añejo at 42% ABV.

The bottle is where the truly outlandish stuff lies, though. Designed by Jose Davalos Mejia, it's an astonishing sight; crafted from five pounds of pure platinum and 4,100 white diamonds. Oh, and it also lays a claim to being the most expensive drink in the world. If you were hoping to get your hands on one for yourself, though, you may be disappointed as it's reported that only one bottle has been produced.

2. Ley .925 Ultra-Premium: $225,000

Not content with doing it once, Tequila Lay actually held the Guinness World Record for the world's most expensive Tequila before, as well. In 2006, its Ley .925 Ultra-Premium was given the accolade – a classy sip made with pure blue agave sap and barrel-aged for six years.

The bottle is another corker: pure white gold, platinum and yellow gold work in harmony to create an arresting spectacle. It's thought that only 33 bottles have been produced.

3. Clase Azul 15th Anniversary Edition: $30,000

It's actually something of a leap down from the dizzy heights of the above entries to get to the price point of Clase Azul's 15th Anniversary Edition, but it’ll still set you back a pretty penny in today's market. When they were sold, initially only in Mexico, one of the 15 bottles in existence would set consumers back $30,000.

However, Clase Azul, which created the bottles in celebration of its 15th year in business, released a 15-bottle collection that featured one of the 15th Anniversary Edition bottles. The price? $450,000. Only two of the 15-bottle collections have been released.

The bottles themselves are hand painted ceramics designed by local artists and come in a decorative box featuring 24-carat gold inlay.

4. Patrón En Lalique, Serie 2: $7,500

Patrón is synonymous with Tequila, one of the sector's best known producers. It also produces one of the most expensive Tequilas in the world in collaboration with luxury French crystal brand Lalique.

The spirit is a beautiful golden extra añejo aged for eight years in American oak, French oak, and sherry barrels.

As for the bottle, it's quite a spectacle; a cut crystal decanter housed in a wooden box complete with retractable viewing panel. The Lalique association no doubt contributes to the value of this expression.

5. Patrón x Guillermo Del Toro Añejo Tequila: up to $5,000

Another Patrón collab, this time with renowned Mexican film director, Guillermo Del Toro, who was born in Jalisco.

It's an extra añejo expression that's actually comprised of a blend of Tequilas aged for five years in oak barrels. The box was designed by frequent Del Toro collaborator Guy Davis, with the whole package placing heavy emphasis on the ritual of drinking Tequila. While the original box, which also features a limited edition liqueur, retailed for $399, it's now being sold for prices up to $5,000.

6. AsomBroso Reserva del Porto – $2,095 (up to $4,000)

Master distiller Ricardo Gamarra used Port Barrels to sweeten this double barrel-rested Tequila, which clocks in at 40% ABV.

The story of the decanter is equally remarkable. Inspired by a decanter Gamarra discovered in an 18th Century castle in Europe, it was crafted with the help of talian artist Luciano Gambaro – with the recreation taking more than two years to complete.

It’ll set you back $2,095 to get your hands on your own bottle, though it is currently sold out.

7. Clase Azul Tequila Ultra Extra Añejo: $3,140

Clase Azul's second entry on the list comes in the illustrious form of Clase Azul Tequila Ultra. Described as "one of the world's exclusive Tequilas" and limited to 100 bottles per year, its easy to see why this striking expression is worth a pretty penny.

Housed in a decanter boasting platinum, silver and 24-carat-gold among its decorative efforts, Clase Azul Tequila Ultra Extra Ańejo is currently available from several retailers, including The Whisky Exchange and Selfridges.

8. Barrique De Ponciano Porfidio: $2,000

You’ll need to go back all the way to 2001 to trace the last time this Tequila was released and sold, which means its market value today is likely to be significantly higher than its original sale price of $2,000.

It's an añejo Tequila made entirely from blue agave and aged in French oak barrels for 10 years.

9. Jose Cuervo 250 Aniversario: around $2,000

Jose Cuervo is the biggest-selling Tequila brand in the world, and certainly one of the most instantly recognisable.

But that doesn't mean the brand can't rustle up something rare and ultra-premium, too. Jose Cuervo 250 Aniversario is made from blue agave and ‘ultra aged’ in ex-bourbon casks before being blended with Tequila from Demijohns in Cuervo's cellar. The resulting Tequila spends a further year in Spanish sherry barrels before being bottled.

10. Deleón Leona Añejo Tequila: $1,000

Our final entry on the list, Deleón Leona Añejo Tequila is the distilleries premium expression and will cost around $1,000 to purchase.

It's aged in American oak and subsequently rested in French Sauternes casks for more than 12 months.
